Seed Idea of a game is a crucial element for a video game. It’s something I try to find out every time I meet new developers. I introduced this concept recently in the Indie Game Movement Podcast. I was invited to talk about how independent game developers should approach public relations. As a freelancer, I like to work with new people on new games. That said, what’s new for me is possibly a 3 years project already.
As a partner, I need to understand the project as deep as possible. That’s why I always ask a lot of questions. I need to perceive it from the outside as a player and from the inside as a team member. Knowing the story of a game is really important to set up good marketing and communication strategies.

After a talk with Kévin, we found out that he was not expressing the story of its game enough. This is something i often notice about indie devs. They have a great idea and once the start developping the game, they communicate more about gameplay mechanics or graphism than the root idea in itself.
As part of my new Press Relations Plans for solo game developers, I am responsible, among other things, for writing press releases. After an interview with the developer, I analyze and recommend communication axes. Indeed, a fresh eye and experience often allows to glimpse new communication possibilities. A press release is essential to promote a video game. In the midst of an overloaded news, it is essential to optimize what we can act on to emerge in the middle of the competition.

Contacting the video game journalists and getting publications in their outlets about your game can be a challenging task. Following these simple tips will still help you in the maneuver.
As a prerequisite you need a good story telling about your video game and brilliant assets to promote it. Do not be fooled, this is only first steps of your journey. Actually, it’s the easiest because you have total control over it.
Then, you must grab the attention of the video game journalists and hope for some exposure in their media. If you consider the news and release schedule, you quickly understand that video game editors are overworked. Taking the following points into account when contacting members of the press does not guarantee that you will get publications about your indie game, but it will prevent you from falling directly into the limbo of their email inboxes.
